The Primary Inspection Kiosk (PIK) project is a large-scale IT project that partners CBSA with airport authorities across Canada to enhance security, reduce wait times for travellers at Canada’s busiest airports and modernize the border process at international airports. This project leverages public-private partnerships to deliver an innovative solution of benefit to Canadians, visitors, and Canadian Airport Authorities, consistent with the Government of Canada’s priority to implement innovative technologies and digitized services.

The introduction of the new kiosks allows the CBSA to move to fully digital border processing. For Canadians, this means that filling out a paper customs card on the flight back to Canada is becoming a thing of the past. Deployments have already occurred at six major airports: Ottawa, Vancouver, Toronto (Terminal 3), Edmonton, Halifax and Montreal, with nearly 6 million traveller passages completed as of December 1, 2017!

Those looking to save even more time can complete their declaration in advance using the new CBSA CanBorder - eDeclaration mobile application (app). Upon arrival, travellers will scan their eDeclaration code at a next-generation kiosk, reducing by roughly 40% the projected PIK processing time. Between March and October 2017, the app was downloaded more than 112,000 times. Find out how you can save time using the Primary Inspection Kiosk and eDeclaration app!

To make these initiatives a success, the CBSA successfully collaborated with regional operations, other government departments, airport authorities and airlines. Dedicated implementation teams were assigned to each airport deployment with representatives from all key stakeholders.
